Taking care of your hair can seem like a full-time job, but it doesn’t have to be! While styling can seem like a priority, the most important thing we must consider is the health of our hair and it’s overall wellness. One thing many people don’t realize is . that healthy hair starts from within. Are you drinking enough water throughout the day? Are you eating a healthy amount of vegetables and protein? Exercising regularly? All of these things not only impact our overall health, but surprisingly impact the health of our hair as well. As many times as we have all heard this before, the fact still stands. The human body truly does need about eight glasses of water per day to function at it’s peak. It may be a challenge to eat a healthy diet, especially with the holidays coming up, but if we make a few sacrificial changes, our hair will reflect what’s within.
Even more surprisingly, a major factor that impacts the health of our hair is our emotional and mental health. Any time a client comes to me and asks what could be causing hair loss, the first thing I always ask is, “Have you been experiencing a lot of stress lately?” Most of the time they say yes, and I let them know that stress can absolutely cause hair loss in many cases. If they are not on any new medications, I begin my attempt to pinpoint the cause of this new stress in their life. Sometimes all it takes is a listening ear to make someone feel a bit of relief. It is proven to help by just having someone to talk to at times. In many other cases, it certainly helps to discuss possible solutions to whatever the problem may be. One thing I always share with anyone dealing with stress, worry, or anxiety is that stressing about it can never change the outcome. Either we trust God with our lives or we don’t. Stress is a sign of a lack of trust in Him because ultimately, He is the only one in control. It’s as simple as that.
Another aspect to consider when discussing the health of our hair is styling. If you are experiencing hair loss around the perimeter of your hairline, it could be due to stressed styling. Tight ponytails, braids, etc. on our edges can easily cause them to break. Also, repeating chemical treatments without proper care can cause damage to our hair, as well as the hair follicles, which can, in return, cause the hair to stop growing in certain areas. For instance, when a chemical treatment, such as a relaxer, is not done professionally, it can cause burning to the scalp which could cause permanent damage. If chemical services are wanted, it is best to seek a licensed professional stylist. Once we pinpoint our specific struggle, we can know where to make adjustments. If you already know that you aren’t eating right, getting enough exercise, or drinking enough water, then create some simple goals for yourself to get started. Increase your water intake by one bottle per day, and maybe replace an unhealthy snack with a fresh fruit. If emotional or mental health is an issue for you, seek a trusted friend or a professional that you can talk to. Faith Assembly of God is a church in the Orlando area that offers free professional counseling. Never be afraid to seek the help that you need. Making these simple changes can drastically affect the overall health of your hair, and will have you glowing with joy and beauty from within!
